Merck & Co.’s arthritis drug Vioxx have caused over 27,000 heart attacks and sudden cardiac deaths before it was banned in the market. There was a report by the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday, mentioning an unreleased study by government supervisory body.
Last week, Merck suddenly remembered Vioxx, for an arthritis treatment after an internal study showed that patients using this drug were more prone to suffer a cardiac than those taking the drug placebo.
The Journal’s report, referring to the study made by the Food and Drug Administration, said, from the approval of Vioxx’s in 1999 to 2003, there were 27,785 heart attacks and sudden cardiac deaths that would have been avoided if Celebrex, a competing drug made by Pfizer Inc. were used as an alternative of Vioxx.
