Spinal Cord Injury: Causes, Symptoms, and Diagnosis by Phoenix Personal Injury Law Firm

Spinal cord injuries can be traumatic or non-traumatic. Different symptoms can be observed among patients, and thus have different effects to certain areas of the body.

What are the common causes of spinal cord injury?

The majority of spinal cord injury cases are traumatic. It can be caused by hyper flexion or hyperextension of the cauda equina (the lower end of the spinal column), lateral bending, dislocation, or rotation. The most common cause of spinal cord injury is motor vehicle accidents. There are also other causes, which include gunshot wounds, wounds from stabbing, sports-related or hobby-related injuries, falls, and work related injuries.

Spinal cord injuries can also be non-traumatic, for example, it can be due to cancer, infections, or spinal cord vascular disease.

What are the symptoms that determine if the person has spinal cord injury?

The symptoms are different across patients. It depends on which part of the spinal cord is injured and how much the impact of the injury is. Generally, patients with spinal cord injury can either feel pain, numbness, or loss of sensation in particular areas of the spine.

A spinal cord injury is considered as an incomplete injury when the patient can feel a sensation around the anus (such as pin pricks). Because sensation and functions are retained, the injury has caused partial damages. In a case of an incomplete spinal cord injury, some or possibly all of the functions below the injured section of the spinal cord will be dysfunctional. In a case of complete spinal cord injury, all the functions below the injured section of the spinal cord will be dysfunctional.

How is spinal cord injury diagnosed ?

Spinal cord injury is diagnosed using a radiographic examination, such as X-ray, MRI, or CT scan. These examinations verify if there are really damages in the spinal cord; it also verifies where exactly the damage is. Other examinations can also be ordered by the healthcare professional. There will be neurological tests to check if the motor function of the person is affected. The sensory and reflexes are tested.

What are the effects of a spinal cord injury?

People with spinal cord injury can also experience loss in voluntary motor control and loss in muscle function. The muscles can turn out to be weak or even totally unresponsive, which can eventually lead to bone and muscle degeneration.  The deficiency in connection between the brain and the entire body can also affect some areas of the body, depending on the area that is affected by the injury.
